SIX Maps – Everything you need to know

SIX Maps NSW is a digital map that provides data and information on Sydney’s transport, infrastructure, and urban development. It was developed by the NSW Government as a way to develop community engagement in the Greater Sydney Area.

Unlike other maps on the market, SIX Maps NSW is an interactive map with multiple layers of data such as types of buildings, public transport systems, population density levels, and more.

SIX Maps are digital maps designed for the Australian market. They provide grid-based, dynamic street-level detail, and are available on desktop, tablet, and mobile devices as well as online.

SIX Maps provide an offline mode that includes rich specification of services businesses provide at each location. The user can also search through their local business listings to find what they are looking for without having to rely on Wi-Fi or the internet.

These maps include a range of features that make it easy for users to get around, such as walking directions and public transport routes.

The SIX Maps website is part of the DFSI Spatial Services portal and provides free online mapping tools. The acronym SIX is an abbreviation for the phrase Spatial Information eXchange. The SIX Maps viewer provides desktop and mobile access to a range of NSW spatial data. SIX Maps has free content available for viewing including:

The opening screen of the SIX Maps program displays a large image of the state of New South Wales. The top of the screen features tools for measuring area and distance, zooming in and out, printing, identifying coordinates, and dropping CSV files or images onto the map. The right-hand side of the window features a variety of drop-down menus. Users can choose from a variety of map layers, such as flood footprint, flood imagery, base maps such as NSW road map, historical imagery, and satellite imagery. Other spatial and cadastral services like map and GPS, map store, survey mark sketches, clip and ship, and NSW Globe are also available on the DFSI Spatial Services portal which is very important for geographical learning. Data that appears within SIX Maps comes from various sources and has no legal status.

The design of the History K-10 Syllabus to rise the student’s interest in exploring the past, develop a critical understanding of the past, and examine its impact on the present. The syllabus also allows students to become informed and active participants in society. More specific integration of historical concepts such as change and continuity and cause and effect is found in this syllabus. It requires students to develop skills in historical analysis, including the sequencing of events and the use of sources. The design of SIX Maps is to help students explore the skills and concepts covered in the course. For example, students might investigate an area of land, possibly looking at historical documents to help explain past events and changes over time. Students can trace changes in ownership and land use over time by overlaying the lot boundaries and labels.

It is ideal to have access to a computer or tablet when using SIX Maps. By exposing students to a range of historical and geographical tools early on in their learning, the class provides the opportunity and time for students to explore these on their own. If an interactive board is available, guided instruction may be beneficial.

Experimenting with SIX Maps

The SIX Maps tools could be used by students to locate, select, and annotate the natural and human features of their school property. For example, students could write a report comparing and contrasting the size of the grassed and concreted areas, or they could compare and contrast how this space has evolved over time. Students could investigate the number of portable buildings on the site and how they affected the local environment.
